Speed Has a New Measurement

On Tuesday, MLB released a new metric called Sprint Speed. The metric, which is part of the Statcast collection of numbers, is defined as “feet per second in a player’s fastest one-second window.” The range is typically 23 ft/sec on the poor side and 30 ft/sec on the strong side. 27 ft/sec is about average. Let’s look at where the Braves sit. Catcher Tyler Flowers comes in at about 25.8. Now, that sounds below average,…

Transaction Tuesday: Weigel, Ruiz, Cumberland, Severino

For the first time this season, the Braves have all seven minor league squads up-and-running. No longer will players get “demoted” to Danville just to get them off the active roster for a few days. I don’t include all the moves to set the Danville and GCL rosters, but did include a few that correlated with promotions/demotions. Further, we have a release and a retirement in this week’s recap. Let’s dive in. *Prospect Rankings come…

A Few Braves Notes

The Atlanta Braves were in a rain delay so I wanted to get a few random notes out to you guys and both come courtesy of Braves Option Guy. You know, BOG – the one guy ALL Braves fans follow. Or should, at least. Today, the Braves optioned Rio Ruiz back to Gwinnett and brought Jace Peterson back. Ruiz has received an extended stay in the majors due to an Adonis Garcia injury (and re-injury),…

Monday Roundup: Long Week Begins and Ends With Disappointment

With eight games at home on the schedule against division foes, last week had a chance of being a springboard for the Braves into a big June. Instead, it ended up a losing effort that included a disheartening doubleheader loss. Jeff Morris. Follow on Twitter June 5: 11-4 LOSS vs. Phillies This one got away from Bartolo Colon early. He was charged with eight runs in his 3.2 innings. Not that it mattered, but Sam Freeman…

Walk Off Talk 1.1: Can the Braves Rotation Improve?

In this new series, Ryan Cothran and I have a back-and-forth as we discuss a subject. It’s informal and we hope you guys get something out of it. This week, we’ll look at the starting pitching staff. At times, we’ll agree. Other times, we’ll disagree. Join the conversation and tell us where we are misguided in the comment section.  Ryan, By Arturo Pardavila III [CC BY 2.0], via Wikimedia Commons Thank God for the Reds.…

Monday Roundup: Trade Johnson?, Cumberland’s Run, Bullpen Issues

Welcome to another week of Braves baseball as we say goodbye to May and head into June. The end of May is often a time in which teams start realizing what they have – and don’t have – and start to make more frequent adjustments. With the Braves continuing to disappoint, might a player or many be in their final days with the team? That question will certainly be answered, but in the meantime, here…

No, Matt Adams Isn’t Going to Play Third Base

By Keith Allison [CC BY-SA 2.0], via Flickr It’s not that I don’t understand the impulse. The Braves have a whole at third base right now – though Rio Ruiz is doing his best to change that – and when Freddie Freeman returns, it would seem that Matt Adams is out of a starting job. Sure, you could shift him to left field, though he’s blocked there by Matt Kemp. Of course, with the way…
