So, Huddy’s Been Good This Year

After nine seasons in Atlanta, Tim Hudson entered free agency fresh off a gruesome ankle injury and with a question mark on his future. At the time, the Atlanta Braves looked fairly set with a rotation led by young veterans Kris Medlen and Mike Minor, plus the arms of Julio Teheran, Brandon Beachy, and Alex Wood. Finding room for Hudson would be tough. Early in free agency, the Giants came calling for Hudson, attempting to…

Roger McDowell Deserves More Credit

Last offseason, the Phillies tried to raid the Braves coaching staff, talking to Roger McDowell. A former member of the Phillies during parts of three seasons, McDowell was offered an undisclosed amount of money from Philly that was more than the Braves were paying him. Atlanta was face with the possibility of needing a new pitching coach, but acted positively to keep McDowell, increasing his salary and inking him to a new two-year contract. After…

The Elbow Ligament Curse

Over the last several weeks, injuries have continue to mount for the Atlanta Braves. First, it was Kris Medlen. Shortly after being labeled an ace by a couple of writers, Meds went down and would need a second Tommy John. It was only a few days later when Brandon Beachy followed suit. By the end of spring training, Cory Gearrin was next in Dr. James Andrews’ waiting room. What the hell is going on? Only…

Simmons Gets a Seven-Year Itch

So, on Tuesday, I wrote that I did not think the likelihood was strong that Andrelton Simmons and the Braves would come to an agreement on an extension that both felt benefited each side.  I ended the article by saying this. Though…I didn’t think Craig Kimbrel would get an extension so tomorrow, we might know about an extension for Simmons. In my defense, it came two days later. For those living under a rock, Simmons inked a…

Contract Extensions Galore!

I took a few weeks off to welcome our daughter Riley into the world and the Braves suddenly become the Rays.  How strange.  John Hart joined the Braves front office this offseason so that may have something to do with it.  Hart’s Cleveland Indians famously gave out a number of extensions to their young stars during the mid-90’s. Jason Heyward – 2 years, $13.3 million There was talk awhile back that Heyward had refused an…

The Golden Phils

How old are the Phillies? Their young star Domonic Brown turned 26 last September.  He’s about a week and a half younger than Braves veteran Justin Upton.  Other younger veterans on the Braves include Jason Heyward, Freddie Freeman, and Mike Minor. The prized new addition of the Phillies is Bobby Abreu.  He made it to the bigs the year after Chipper Jones‘s first full season in the majors.  Alex Wood was five years old.  Abreu’s…

Jeff Schultz Doesn’t Like Me

I loved Tim Hudson.  Sure, he was gritty, though I despise that term.  If the adjective can be used to describe David Eckstein, it’s not a term you want to receive.  Hudson arrived after the 2004 season in a trade from the A’s and received an extension after posting monster seasons for the A’s that included four seasons of 4.8 fWAR or better before the trade.  He never was that good in Atlanta, but he…
