Comparing 2017 to 1991? Pump the Breaks

Julio Teheran | Jeff Morris (Follow on Twitter) During yesterday’s broadcast, Braves “analyst” and resident curmudgeon Joe Simpson took time from telling everyone what music was appropriate to play during a loss to compare-and-contrast the 2017 Braves with the 1991 Braves. That team, after 80 games, was 40-40 and in third place in the NL West, 8.5 games back. The current squad, who would win their 81st game later that day, was 39-41 with a…

Speed Has a New Measurement

On Tuesday, MLB released a new metric called Sprint Speed. The metric, which is part of the Statcast collection of numbers, is defined as “feet per second in a player’s fastest one-second window.” The range is typically 23 ft/sec on the poor side and 30 ft/sec on the strong side. 27 ft/sec is about average. Let’s look at where the Braves sit. Catcher Tyler Flowers comes in at about 25.8. Now, that sounds below average,…

Prepping for the Trade Deadline: Part 1

(Written by Ryan Cothran, a contributor at Walk-Off Walk for the last few weeks. Previous columns by Cothran include one on BABIP, the bullpen, and reviewing the Braves’ buy-low philosophy on Tommy John survivors. Remember to follow Ryan on Twitter.) By Arturo Pardavila III [CC BY 2.0], via Wikimedia Commons Yes, the trade deadline is a little way off, but let it be known that Braves General Manager John Coppolella is always anxious to make…

Transaction Tuesday: Ruiz, Gohara, Jackson, and poor poor Freddie

Last week’s update included a surprising amount of transactions involving the major league squad – zero. This week was not nearly as quiet. Prepare for an epic journey through the system. A note on this report – moves referenced today took place between May 16 and May 22. Taxi Squad refers to a Braves minor league team “sending” a player to Danville just to get him off the active roster. In most cases, the player will…

Braves Sign James Loney

By Keith Allison [CC BY-SA 2.0], via Wikimedia Commons I was in the middle of writing a (longer) article on what the Braves should do in the Freddie Freeman-less present, but Atlanta decided to keep me from polishing it up by announcing what their plans were. The Braves have signed former Dodger and Ray James Loney. The now 33-year-old also has played for the Red Sox (he did?) and most recently the Mets last season.…

Monday Roundup: Bullpen Usage, Rotation Comparison, Missing Alex Wood

Welcome to this week’s Monday Roundup. WOW is improving in its content delivery as this weekend saw a number of articles. Going to continue the trend moving into this week. If you haven’t already, check out new contributor Ryan Cothran’s first article about BABIP. May 8: Off May 9: 8-3 LOSS at Astros Bartolo Colon was saddled with a five-run first and this game was essentially done. Colon did work into the sixth, but gave up…

Saturday Stats Pack – Freeman, Krol, Ender, Bonifacio

By EricEnfermero (Own work) [CC BY-SA 4.0], via Wikimedia Commons 203 wRC+ I can probably make an entire article out of the absolutely insane numbers Freddie Freeman is posting, but for today, let’s focus on his Weighted Runs Created Plus, or wRC+. This is one of my favorite offensive stats because it combines total offensive performance, park factor, and league factors all in one easy to compare statistic. Freeman is currently one of six players…
