So Let’s Talk About Dansby Swanson

Wikimedia Commons Baseball is hard. I flamed out around T-ball so I really can’t imagine how hard major league baseball is. I know far more players fail at it than succeed so players struggling shouldn’t ever really surprise us, especially young players. It should be obvious but Aaron Judge is an outlier. The problem is we’ve had guys like Judge and Bellinger and Correa and Seager come up recently and light the world on fire…

Monday Recap: Sweep, Buying/Selling, Early Freeman at 3B Metrics

Welcome to this week’s quick Monday Recap. With just three games to review because of the All-Star Break, we won’t have to spend too much time on them. Want to point out a few things before we look back at the week that just concluded. We posted our Midseason Top 50 Prospects last week with contributors Ryan Cothran and Stephen Tolbert pitching in. Ryan’s been with WOW for awhile now, but Tolbert recently joined. He’s…

Time to Move Brandon Phillips

Jeff Morris – Follow on Twitter John Coppolella should trade Brandon Phillips. Sure, we can talk into lengths (and have) about the limitations with trading Phillips. To sum up, the market is likely small for a second baseman who can’t play anywhere else and has the ability to block trades to a dozen other teams. Such a small market makes Phillips a guy who won’t bring much in a trade. Even though he’s dirt cheap…

First Half Timeline for the Braves

By EricEnfermero [CC BY-SA 4.0], via Wikimedia Commons The Braves enter the All-Star Break at 42-45, 9.5 games out of the Eastern Division and nine games behind the Rockies for the second Wild Card spot. Two other teams, the Cardinals and Cubs, are a half-game in front of them. Their expected win-loss record is actually worse at 39-48, a product of a bad pitching staff. How did we get here? Here’s a timeline of the…

Speed Has a New Measurement

On Tuesday, MLB released a new metric called Sprint Speed. The metric, which is part of the Statcast collection of numbers, is defined as “feet per second in a player’s fastest one-second window.” The range is typically 23 ft/sec on the poor side and 30 ft/sec on the strong side. 27 ft/sec is about average. Let’s look at where the Braves sit. Catcher Tyler Flowers comes in at about 25.8. Now, that sounds below average,…

Walk-Off Talk 1.6: Finding A Partner (Part 3) – The Matt Adams Conundrum

(Previously…on Walk-Off Talk…Ryan and I tried to find some interested teams for the two most valuable soon-to-be free agents on the Braves, Jaime Garcia and Brandon Phillips. Next, we looked at one-year assets like Jason Motte and Kurt Suzuki and tried to locate interested parties. Today, we focus completely on one player and his effect on the Braves’ franchise player. Events occur in real time.)  Ryan, So, here we go. Matt Adams. Oh, boy. When…

Monday Roundup: Big Flies Lead to Big Week

A full slate of games last week as the Braves welcomed both the Giants and Brewers to town. Let’s dive in. June 19, 9-0 WIN vs. Giants Mr. Ryan Cothran recently pointed out how R.A. Dickey‘s splits-by-month improve once the temperatures warm up. Last Monday, he made Cothran look really good with seven masterful frames. He yielded just three hits and walked one while striking out a half-dozen. The game was a close one heading…
