The Great Run Differential Debate

As the Braves polished off the Diamondbacks on Sunday afternoon, ESPN’s Dan Szymborski took to twitter. Things quickly went nutty from there. Braves are at .500! With a similar run differential to the Mets, White Sox, Pirates, and Angels. So…yeah… — Dan Szymborski (@DSzymborski) July 16, 2017 Ignoring the “So…yeah…” at the end, the tweet is accurate. With a run differential of -34, the Braves are reasonably close in run differential with the Mets (-40),…

Speed Has a New Measurement

On Tuesday, MLB released a new metric called Sprint Speed. The metric, which is part of the Statcast collection of numbers, is defined as “feet per second in a player’s fastest one-second window.” The range is typically 23 ft/sec on the poor side and 30 ft/sec on the strong side. 27 ft/sec is about average. Let’s look at where the Braves sit. Catcher Tyler Flowers comes in at about 25.8. Now, that sounds below average,…

A Few Braves Notes

The Atlanta Braves were in a rain delay so I wanted to get a few random notes out to you guys and both come courtesy of Braves Option Guy. You know, BOG – the one guy ALL Braves fans follow. Or should, at least. Today, the Braves optioned Rio Ruiz back to Gwinnett and brought Jace Peterson back. Ruiz has received an extended stay in the majors due to an Adonis Garcia injury (and re-injury),…

Transaction Tuesday: Newcomb, Medlen, Pike, Minter

Lots of moves to report this week in this recap. A top prospect is promoted to the bigs, a former prospect works his way up the ladder, and a non-prospect continues his wayward journey to never spend too much time in one city. Hope you enjoy! A note on this report – moves referenced today took place between June 6 and June 12. I no longer refer to Taxi Squad, but extended spring training which…

Follow him on Twitter @AtlBravesJeff May 29, 6-3 WIN @ Angels The Braves scored all of their runs in the third with help from a pair of two-run doubles off the bats of the recently acquired Matt Adams and Danny Santana. Tyler Flowers, who had…

Transaction Tuesday: Wisler, Blair, Medlen, and Wentz

In this weekly review of the Braves’ transactions, we focus a good deal on the pitchers. Some are attempting to stay in the majors for good while others are trying to work their way back. Elsewhere, one of Atlanta’s best young guns is back on the mound just a week after a liner had Braves fans holding their breaths after it struck him. A note on this report – moves referenced today took place between…

Prepping for the Trade Deadline: Part 2

(Written by Ryan Cothran, a contributor at Walk-Off Walk for the last few weeks. Previous columns by Cothran include one on BABIP, the bullpen, and reviewing the Braves’ buy-low philosophy on Tommy John survivors. The first part of this series detailed possible fixes for the team should there be trades over the next couple of months. Remember to follow Ryan on Twitter.) Last year, while writing for Tomahawk Take, I wrote a piece regarding organizational…
