On This HOF Voting Absurdity

I have avoided a mock ballot for the Hall of Fame.  I really don’t want to get into the idea of whether or not we should allow players suspected (or suspended) of PED usage to join the moral giants like Ty Cobb and Mickey Mantle.  I mean, if you want to keep Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens out, fine.  I think it’s a ridiculous effort, but whatever.  Your choice. But the idea that someone could…

The Babbling Brooks of Conrad

Brooks Conrad spent last season in Japan, struggling as a member of the Hanshin Tigers.  While there, he played with another former Brave, Blaine Boyer.  Unlike Boyer, who posted solid numbers, Conrad slashed his way to .175/.319/.281 while hitting no homers in 69 AB and playing sparingly at third.  It was yet another disappointing turn for someone whose career seemed to peak in the summer of 2009. Conrad was drafted in 2001 by the Houston…

Jeff Schultz Doesn’t Like Me

I loved Tim Hudson.  Sure, he was gritty, though I despise that term.  If the adjective can be used to describe David Eckstein, it’s not a term you want to receive.  Hudson arrived after the 2004 season in a trade from the A’s and received an extension after posting monster seasons for the A’s that included four seasons of 4.8 fWAR or better before the trade.  He never was that good in Atlanta, but he…

Help us Obi Frank Kenobi, You’re Our Only Hope

The sky is falling, right is left, and up is down.  Yes, that means I am trying to dust this blog off for another go.  I mentioned it before here, but I enrolled to complete my bachelor’s program through online classes last fall.  First semester – done and through a few classes at a time, I am hopeful to finish up my degree next spring.  As a stay-at-home father with a second daughter due in…

Random Prospect of the Day: Omar Poveda

Random Prospect of the Day: Omar Poveda

What we have today is the post-hype sleeper.  Not every prospect avoids all trouble as he climbs the minors.  Some have injuries that push them back or simply running into a wall. Omar Poveda just completed his first year in the Braves system.  It might be his only one, unfortunately, but he was a solid, dependable pitcher for the Gwinnett Braves and if the Braves had the available room, he might have even earned a…

The Braves Are Top Five In a Lot of Categories

It’s been a decent season for the Atlanta Braves. They have the best ERA in baseball at 3.18, the lowest mark since 2002 when they had a 3.13 ERA.  Atlanta leads the National League in homers and it’s a ten-homer edge over the Cubs.  With 161 homers, they already have twelve more than last season.  Now, sure, for the third consecutive season, they will probably set the franchise mark in strikeouts in a single season.…

Why did the Braves Go So Loe?

It’s difficult enough to follow day games.  Work, family, school, General Hospital.  I mean…add baseball to that and it seems almost impossible to pay attention.  Of course, if you saw the pitcher matchup for today’s game against the Mets, you might have said “why bother?”  Maybe you would have added some expletives.  Feel free. Atlanta sent Kameron Loe to the bump to face the Mets because they hate their fans.  No, not really.  On the…
