Braves Reportedly Hire Alex Anthoupolos as GM

Joel Sherman of the New York Post has breaking news for the Atlanta Braves tonight:

He then followed that tweet up with this one:

The Braves haven’t officially announced anything yet so this is all still unconfirmed but Sherman isn’t typically in the business of getting things like this wrong.

Anthopoulos spent 6 years (2010-2015) as the GM of the Toronto Blue Jays, taking them from divisional bottom dweller to a playoff team and won the Sporting News Executive of the Year award in 2015.

At the end of the year in 2015, Toronto offered him a 5-year extension to continue as the GM but Anthopoulos turned it down without ever giving a public reason why. Many assumed Toronto’s hiring of Mark Shapiro as president/CEO was the main reason, as Anthopoulos feared he wouldn’t have the same level of autonomy. These reports were never confirmed.

For the past two seasons Anthopoulos has been working as the vice-president of baseball operations for the LA Dodgers.

The second tweet Sherman sent shouldn’t be ignored in all this. According to his sources, Anthopoulos will have full control and final authority on all baseball matters while John Hart spends whatever time he has left in Atlanta as ‘counsel/figurehead.” It was unlikely Atlanta was going to be able to lure someone of this caliber without giving them such authority.

We’ll obviously have more as things become official but as of now, this is a home-run hire for the Atlanta Braves.
