155 and Counting

In Atlanta, it was Saturday, but in Arizona, it was a Friday night game where the Braves, behind some good offense and the great Julio Teheran, took the first of a three-game set in the desert from the Diamondbacks 5-2. The game was most notable for being the 155th time Craig Kimbrel took over a game with a close lead and finished the game. I am one of those guys who thinks saves are way,…

1995 Reflections: Durham Bulls

Welcome to the fourth week of a look back at the “Other” 1995 seasons for teams affiliated to the Braves. In many cases, I search for information about the particular team through Google, whose their automatic fill-in options don’t catch my eye. In the case of the 1995 Durham Bulls, there was something that grabbed my attention. If you have Chrome, go ahead and start typing “1995 Durham Bulls.” I’ll wait. Did you see the…

How Much of a Mistake was Chris Johnson’s Extension?

When Chris Johnson inked a three year contract worth $23.5M with a fourth year option that could increase the deal to nearly $35M, it prompted a lot of questions. Was Johnson worth that money, especially coming off a career year that saw him slash .321/.358/.457? Was Johnson worth the commitment given that the Braves don’t have a ready-replacement? Will giving extra cash now save money later and/or provide the team with a better idea of…

Random Ex-Brave: Gerald Williams

Time to dust off another series. Weekly columns keep me writing and adding a sprinkling of extra columns gives me plenty of content. Similar to the Random Prospect series, I will randomly chose players from the Braves years since 1991, the year my nine-year old former self fell in love with the team. The latest ex-Brave is a fun one.  He had the best run of his career with the Braves, but his most memorable…

Favorite Braves List – #3 Starter

Favorite Braves List (so far) Ace Starter – Greg Maddux #2 Starter – John Smoltz Catcher – Brian McCann First Base – Fred McGriff Second Base – Marcus Giles Favorite Braves List – #3 Starter Tim Hudson What a strange week to add Huddy to the Favorite…

Could the Braves Follow the Astros’ Lead

Yesterday, Houston Astros 1B Jon Singleton signed a five-year contract worth $10M with incentives and option years that could see the contract worth $35M over eight years. The prospect, who has ranked in the #100 in both Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus in each of the last four years, had been hitting .267 with a .941 OPS for Houston’s AAA squad, Oklahoma City. Singleton was once acquired in the Hunter Pence deal back in 2011.…

Once a Brave, Always a Brave – AL East

Today, I dust off a return of a weekly column that will look into how former Braves are performing around the majors. Let’s start in the AL East where one of Atlanta’s big free agents last offseason landed. Baltimore P Luis Ayala (AA) – Acquired last season, Ayala dealt with a bout of depression or anxiety or a stomach virus (different stories exist) that sent him to the Disabled List before finally working his way…
