FUN-DA-MENTALS!

There is a misconception about SABR guys.  Seamheads don’t appreciate the fundamentals, they say.  “They” are idiots, but that’s nothing new.  SABR guys appreciate the basics of the game quite a good deal.  Hell, they even went so far to create things that attempt the quantify someone’s base-running ability beyond just stolen bases.  After all, the ability to steal bases is only a minor part of base-running. In the recent series against the Washington Nationals,…

What to do with Paul Maholm?

Before his own injury and even before Tim Hudson‘s horrific injury, there was a decent amount of trade talk on what to do with the starting rotation.  Specifically, what to do with Paul Maholm.  Since starting the year with a tremendous three starts that suddenly had Braves fans wondering if they had a late bloomer in their rotation, Maholm has went downhill.  In 17 starts since opening the year with 20.1 scoreless innings, Maholm has…

Negative Nelly Time: Bullpen Concerns

The bullpen has been dominant. That’s been clear and no team has felt that dominance more than the Washington Nationals.  As far as run prevention goes, Atlanta entered Wednesday’s action with a 2.39 ERA.  The Royals are second at 2.85.  Least I don’t bring up a better run prevention number.  Their FIP is 3.04.  The A’s are second at 3.21.  They aren’t a great K/8 pen, only 11th, and they’re in the middle of the…

View From the Rock: Scouting Ayala, Kimbrel, Wood

Bryce is back with some scouting reports on a few Braves pitchers.  A car accident can’t keep him down!  I’ve seen pictures of the car and I’m happy Bryce and his mother weren’t more hurt than they were considering how bad the car looked.  Bryce is a former pitcher and has a real eye for scouting them.     Less than 24 hours removed from a significant car accident, I am back. I bet you’re…

Once a Brave, Always a Brave – AL East

…excluding John Rocker. I think I am clear that I love having a regular series to write about.  Random Prospects, Random Ex-Braves, Favorite Braves List, the now defunct Twitter Feed (better in the offseason)…suffice it to say, I like having ongoing segments because, mainly, it takes out the difficulty of trying to be creative.  As a stay-at-home dad with a second kid on the way, I can’t always be a creative master. So, in the…

August 7: My Day

I don’t talk too much about myself here because frankly, this blog is about the Braves.  However, because it’s August 7th, this blog, for a day, becomes about the Braves and me.  You see, today is my birthday and I’m forced to ask…how do the Braves play on my Name Day? In 1982, I was born.  Had I been born about an hour earlier, I would have been an August 6th baby.  However, the seventh…

Wait, What?

Sometimes, you miss little subtle things in the numbers.  Time to find them and say “wait, what?  He’s doing what?” Freddie Freeman – Ranked Fifth in fWAR For all of the talk, and there was a lot, that the man who lives by Hug Life was the fifth or sixth best option at first base in the National League and not close to being a worthwhile All-Star, Freeman is currently fifth among all players at…
